Michigan has a 12% unemployment rate. The highest in the United States. While Michigan is third highest in Foreclosures.
It’s really bad up here economically. General Motors is close too declaring bankruptcy’s with a stock price that has not been seen since the early 1960’s…GM is around a dollar or so per share…I remember when GM was selling for around 75 dollars a share.
Almost every town up here has a population of homeless people. Driving too work I often see people walking or riding their bicycles with backpacks. People holding up cardboard signs saying willing to work for food is also a common sight.
I’m lucky I still have a full-time job. However wages have been frozen indefinitely until things turn around.
My grandmother who is in her 80’s remembers the depression and what it was like too go with out food some days…She thinks it’s happing again….I just hope she is wrong….
It really is a scary time for working people.

If Michigan can
learn something from Tata in India, then maybe they will survive. Tata has come up with a cheap car that gets phenominal gas mileage. I bet if GM did something like that, everyone would be employed again. I'm actually waiting to replace my junker with a new car AFTER our auto companies offer something worth buying.

You say, Toad....
scary time for working people and I think also for the unemployed. I think the best things employed folks can do is to clear debt and pinch some savings out of income too.
And in the process, it may be wise to get a food supply to see the family through some shortages and interruption in food supply or delivery. Beans, rice, and tomato sauce, may not sound all that exciting, but together, they can keep a family fed.

we expect about 6% here by the end of the year. Before the proverbial hit the fan, NZ had got unemployment down to about 3.4%.
