3200 post offices could close in America...

3200 post offices could close in America as the economic crisis deepens and the Government decides how to cut costs in public spending.

Could the taxation of marijuana prove to be the salvation for the economic woes of America?

Is that really a dopey idea?

Well, the idea of closing

Well, the idea of closing post office and impose tax on Mrijuana for cutting cost is admirable. Because in this 21st century, in a country like USA - were internet, fax is just a part and parcel of our everyday life, post offices are not contributing a lot. Cannabis, Marijuana whatever you tell is very much harmful for our health. So I personally think government has take the right decision.

My daughter's in-laws are Canadian and often use

the train to visit their children in the U.S. They love it and feel it is much less expensive than going by car, but our train system has had it's own problems needing bailouts from the government from time to time to keep going. If ridership increases, which it is likely to do if gasoline gets more expensive, train systems may become profitable again.

Hutt, closing post offices shouldn't affect government

spending in the United States one way or another. The post office is privately run although there is a government agency that does exercise some oversight since it was originally formed as part of our government. For example, the oversight agency may or may not approve raising the price of stamps, but this is more to protect the people from being gouged rather than to help out those who operate the post office.

If the post office operates at a loss, our federal government doesn't bail them out. (Although it doesn't seem to mind bailing everyone else out.)

The post office is supposed to run on what they make from selling services to the public. Although the post office has actually made a profit in a number of the past few years they claim, due to union demands for higher wages, and higher costs for fuel, that they need to close units and/or raise prices for services they provide.

I didn't know that...

our's was commercialised in the 1980's when so much govt enterprise was privatised. Tney didn't have the political will to go further after privatising telcom and our savings bank. Under Labour the new NZ Post set up a new bank, called Kiwibank. This has been popular and provided competition in some areas to the Aussie owned banks in NZ. Late last year Labour even bought back the railways from the Aussies, who had bought it off an American group. It had been really run down, after the best parts had been hocked off. None of them supported passenger services , only freight. But so far the new conservative govt show's no signs of hocking off rail again, which they did in 1994 when last in power. Rail is making a come-back in many countries, providing passenger services, but also good tourist possibilities. So I hope it is retained in NZ, even if it needs a billion dollars to upgrade the trains and rail network. A good investment in the long run, I would suggest!

Actually the idea has...

come from someone who actually sells medicinal marijuana.

They are cutting out Saturday mail deliveries here in NZ too.

I remember when we had two mail deliveries

a day - Monday to Friday, with a guy on a bicycle. Now we have one delivery a day by a postie on a motorised bike. Unless we write letters more there will be no postie.

Hutt, do you really think that those who have been

selling marijuana illegally for years would suddenly become law-abiding citizens, and willingly pay a tax on their profits if marijuana was legalized?

Like the word play, Hutt

hate the idea.

I've been out of the loop because of a trip to Wisconsin. I lost a dear friend to a heart attack. Been thinking of all of you as I endured the pain of the loss of a man I knew and looked up to for well over thirty years. Tell your friends how important they are to you, it may be the last time you see them. The BlogEvolve crew has become very important to me. God Bless All Of You.

I'm still away from my writing space and will be for maybe two more weeks, just had a chance to check in and I wanted to be sure to use the opportunity to say hello to my friends.

Sorry about your Friend, Edward

It is very sad to lose someone close to you. Time heals.......take care.

Clever Play on Words

IWith e-mail cutting into their business, the post office has to cut expenses. They have been talking about cutting out one delivery daytoo. I don't know why they need to deliver mail on the weekends at all. The idea of legalizing MJ has been around for awhile. I guess so many people use it so they might as well legalize it and tax it. I don't drink or use any kind of drugs...not even legal ones except a little asperin now and then so it won't affect me one way or another unless someone is so affected by it they do something stupid and hurt me or some other innocent person. Heck.....I would rather see legaalized mj than alcohol. But perferably.....neither......if substances like alcohol and other drugs are legalized....then they should be taxed to the hilt.
