40-below-zero Centigrade = 40-below-zero Fahrenheit

In the fall, weather people were predicting a mild and low-snow winter for those of us in the upper American Midwest -- THEY WERE WRONG!

So far, it's been a bitter cold winter, with huge amounts of snow. Here in northern Minnesota, we have already hit that magic "40-40" mark twice -- that is, 40-degrees-below-zero. We have about two feet of snow on the ground.

Interestingly, 40-below Centigrade is the same as 40-below Fahrenheit. The two temperature grade scales meet to become equivalent at that point. Most of the world has long since switched over to using the Centigrade scale for measuring temps, but here in the U.S.A., we still abide by Fahrenheit, and we also still continue to reject the metric system, choosing to measure distances in miles, rather than kilometers, and use pounds and ounces instead of grams and kilograms.

Whatever -- it's stinkin' cold here! Today, the high temp during the day is expected to be -15 F. Along with a stiff wind out of the north, there will be a 40- to 50-below windchill factor. Tonight, we'll be flirting with the miserable "40-40" factor again!

Yeah, yeah, I know we're supposed to be tough here in Minnesota, but that doesn't mean I can't grumble about the frigid air -- in fact, grumbling about the long, cold winters is a kind of "national pass time" here in the north.

Oh well -- temps are supposed to moderate next week! We may even see a high of 22 F !! Believe me, that will seems like shirt sleeve weather for our tough hides! In the meantime -- "BRRRRRR!"

Move to Queensland Australia

The weather is beautiful one day, and perfect the next. It is in some of our state's publicity so must be true. We seldom need winter clothes, and it is often warm enough to swim in the pool or the sea!!!

Our temps

are in the 40's but that's really cold to us because we are not used to it. Our houses aren't insulated for it either. So even though that's spring-like temps to you......it is winter to us.
