I was to meet some of my client's family on the Sunday at lunch, and found my way to the house quite easily. They weren't far from the village, in a little stone farmhouse surrounded by green pastures.
The hospitality was very welcoming, the meal was excellent and in the afternoon I was taken on a tour of the surrounding areas. We went for a drive up around where the Galtee Castle had been until the 1940's - which had been destroy by fire in one of the many altercations that are legend in this area. All that stands now to indicate that a castle or great home had ever been in the area, are the gatehouses at either end of the drive way to the castle. It is now all overgrown, the stone from the castle all having been carted away to build a monastery in some other part of Ireland.
It was good to see the country side and gain an insight into the way life was there nearly 80 years ago. Now modern homes are being built, but for the most part the older stone houses still stand and many have been in the same family for generations.
We visited a little stone house almost hidden in the woods where a lovely lady had spent her time away from Dublin. She was 90 now, and still very active, but no longer able to spend time in the house alone. Until recently there were no modern conveniences - but it never bothered her - she'd escape from her business interests in the city and just rest for days in the little cottage.
I stayed the night with the family, but they were going away for a few days, so I had to move on again. I made arrangements to return later to get more information and perhaps meet other family members.
The next morning I was on my way again.
