I confiscated 6 mobile phones to day in class. Every day I start with the rules. NO MOBILE PHONES IN CLASS. Unfortunately some students have their Chinese/English dictionary in their phone - but it is hard to determined what is being done on the phone in class.
The students are text mad here. And so in class it is common for students to answer messages, and send them. Texting of course.
Today I learned too that when I confiscate a mobile phone - it will be replaced. All students are happy to share their phones. So if I take one, another student will take pity and replace it. The students then come begging and promising to be better in class. They students I might add are about 22 years old.
Also today I found one student with 3 mobile phones. One she uses to make voice calls, the other for texting and the third one for the Internet!
Spare me!!!!
When they finish class at night, we seem them - thousands of them walking along the school paths in the darkness of the night (it is 8.30 pm before they finish class!) and their faces are lit up as the busily check their messages, or send more texts.
It is not just the students. Everyone is busily on their mobile phone. Texting, chatting. Catching a bus or train is interesting - as the mobile phones ring and the conversations are always loud. It is as if they are shouting.
I hope it isn't catching, this addiction. I only have two!
