Adventure Grandma

This has been inspired by Jeanne and Hutts.

I have four grandchildren - aged from nearly three to eight years of age. They all have grandparents from their other families too. When I knew I was going to be a grandmother I nearly freaked out. I felt the term grandmother created a vision of a greyhaired old lady sitting in a rocking chair, knitting as she rocked her life away.

And I had to think of a name for me. We had grandma, nanna, gran, and so forth. So I chose a name, which I choose not to share here. It is just a nickname. Starts with D. Anyway, it was a stroke of genius in retrospect. For a start "D" is easy to say and all the children got a grasp on my name very early.

And I love it when they are asked some question in reference to their "grandmother" at school or similar. "She is NOT my grandmother, she is my D (nickname)" much to the amusement of all including me.

The older one eventually started saying "Well, she is sort of our grandmother, but she is not a normal grandmother. She is an Adventure Grandmother".

Now I "wear" this mantle with pride. Not a normal grandmother. Adventure grandmother. If you ask the older one to explain, she'll say we have a lot of fun. Her other grandmother is the shopping grandmother. She loves shopping and buying things for the girls. I take them on adventures. And I live adventures. They follow my travels with interest - and they love their Chinese costumes and trinkets.

Even simple activities we create stories about. We have a secret beach, that few people know about. We collect shells, and paddle in the shallow waters discovering things. I take them on outings to islands, on boats, on planes, to lakes. We go fishing. We go to art galleries, (yes, even the little ones love it), and we do 'strange' things. We are always thinking up different things to do.

I am supposed to be saving up to take the two older girls (and their parents I assume) to China. The 8 year old is convinced it will happen soon.

Maybe I will win the lottery. Maybe I should take a ticket.

In any case I don't feel like an old rocking chair granny, even though I proudly tell about my grandchildren. The Chinese can't believe it! "I look so young!"

It is a load of fun. I like my title. "Adventure grandmother."

They are pretty clever kids too

especially the two older ones. Amazing what they do. They have had plenty of encouragement from all the family.

Admiring you, Elly

How do you think up all the places to go to? I'm sure I would end up being the Boring Grandma if my one child ever has kids...mostly since I spend lots of time blogging and such.

Thinking of places to go to

is easy. Kids like to see different things. I even make up stuff. I wrote a book about a fairy in our garden, even have a glass fairy that I took photos of and used to illustrate the book. The kids always look for this fairy in my garden, but they've never found her. The fairy has been in their house too - we have photos to prove it :). I dream up impossible things. Quite funny really. Much more fun than the shopping grandma!

You need energy to be an Adventure D! We dont get around so much, but end up with a big crew of grandkids. We are just Nannie and Granddad.

Cheers,Elly.
