Ballast-free ships

University of Michigan engineers are working to overhaul ship design by eliminating the need for ballast tanks that help spread invasive species. The ballast free ships designs they are working on involve a constant flow of local sea water through a network of large pipes.

The Great Lakes in particular have been hit extremely hard by invasive species. So far 185 nonnative aquatic species have been identified in the Great Lakes.
