Bittersweet Day At The Ball Park!!!!!!!!

Every trip to the ball park makes the day a good one. A couple of weeks ago my family attended the Thursday night game at Minute Maid Park in Houston, despite the fact that Hurricane Ike would be slamming into our area.

Last night we went again to see the Astros, our first time since the storm. It was a fun game, with the Astros winning over the Atlanta Braves on a home run in the bottom of the ninth by Darin Erstad. I even caught a ball off the bat of Chipper Jones during batting practice.

But once every season there is a bittersweet day at the ball park. It is on the day that you know it will be next April before you will get to go to a ball game again. That was how it was last night. By the time I got to the car, the Brewers had finished their game with a win, thus eliminating Houston from the post season(I knew that the Cubs, who had already clinched the division title, would lose a game against since the loss would make it unnecessary to come to Houston on Monday for a make-up game).

I will watch the playoffs and the World Series, but I won't get to see a game in person again till spring! Heavy sigh!

And one of the greatest batsman...

to play the game - holds a lot of batting records. Probably better when he wasn't captain and could concentrate on his freakish talents. Yeah, I'm a sports nut - mainly our sports, but can appreciate talent and skills. Old time boxing - Louis or Ali? The former for me. Louis reportedly worked on his hand speed trying to catch flies. Ali was such a pain in the butt when he was younger. Cant deny the man's skill. Got screwed up when he became a Black Muslim. Did you know when he got kicked out of boxing for those years, Smoking Joe Frasier was one of the few to show some friendship? Most didn't want to know him.I was a real fan of Frasier. So tough, hard and resolute!

I got to see Ali firght before he was Ali, Hutt!

He fought Big Cat Williams in the Astrodome. I was struck that night with what a physical specimen he was. So tall and strong and quick as lightening. I did not care for his antics, but he was a tremendous athlete.

Frasier, as you said, was the image of rock solid dedication and perseverance.

At that time he would have been...

Cassius Clay. Ali was so fast and could hit so many times in the one area it was as good as an ordinary KO.

I get like that...

when the rugby season has ended. But our seasons have extended right across the year now. We have an end of year tour by the All Blacks to the UK, with a historical one off game against Australia at Hong Kong on the way for both international teams. This is a get up in the early hours for about five weeks!

When they finish just a few weeks before Christmas, its no rugby until Feb when our professional Super 14 sides play. Local club rugby starts in April, followed by the semi-professional rep season which is moving towards play-offs right night.

Of course in the summer here cricket rules, though our male softballers are world champs. There is no baseball here. Tis a pity because I like the look of baseball. But softball is it. It used to be very popular 20-25 years ago and we would go locally to watch. Our boys played it; our eldest boy was good enough to go and play higher up. His elder sister could have too - but they both tossed it in and he concentrated on rugby. He could have made it at the top at rugby, but went to Australia and played amateur rugby league( the 13 man game). His choice, though!

I love sports fans, Hutt!

Just touch a nerve and they will passionately tell their favorite stories! I go to several places that really love cricket! When the West Indies plays in international competetion, the folks will stay up all night or get up very early. They especially love to beat England. Brian Lara is a folk hero!
