Crichton's Next!

I do not usually enjoy books and movies that are intended to promote some particular message. But I like Michael Crichton's writing, as he always tells a story and usually has considerable intellectual substance with which the reader is stimulated to thought.

No One Else

Way back--in another blogworld, I entered this in a poetry challenge, in which the rhyming words were provided by other participants:

In For Four Days, Out For Two Weeks!

I spent the last week at church camp with 300 teenagers and a staff of about 75 adults. We were in the Hill country of Texas, west of San Antonio. It was hot and for the most part dry. I was the cabin counselor for 20 young men who just finished the 10th grade. I taught their Bible classes in the daytime. It also had 22 young women the same age.

The Week Before Camp!

I'm going with a group from our congregation to a camp next week. There will be kids from maybe a dozen congregations gather in the hill country outside of San Antonio. There will be around 300 teenagers and about 70 staff members. This will be my 29th consecutive summer at that camp. I will be teaching 10th-graders, which is my favorite age group to teach. I know some people will think it's strange, but I love teenagers and I love camp.

Assumptions Can Be Dangerous

When I was a little guy, my mom would have some sort of snack for me when I got home from school. She baked cookies or cakes or brownies. She liked to make pudding, even in the days before instant pudding was available. And it was one of my favorites. Sometimes we had butterscotch, sometimes vanilla, sometimes tapioca, but my favorite was chocolate.

The Preacher's Best Friend

Every congregation seems to have at least one "preacher's best friend". Some have more than one. Let me describe this unusual soul.

Most often this person is female, but not always, and frequently is over 50 years old. She is invariably sensitive and considerate. She is the one who unexpectedly comes by the preacher, pats him on the back and gives him a sincere word of encouragement. She always has a warm smile and a bright countenance.

Reflections on Contentment

I read blog on Happines and its relationship to money. I would like to affirm the idea that contentment is in reality a state of mind over which individuals should have at least some measure of control. We should determine that we will not let anyone else dictate the way respond to any situation, no matter how distasteful. Like the Apostle Paul, we should strive to be content in whatever state we find ourselves.

Technorati Claim

Here is my claim post so I can promote this scintillating blog with my Technorati Profile

Blatantly Bogus

Over the past few weeks, while watching the Astros' broadcasts, I have seen an ad campaign by Just For Men, the hair color product. They have had some lame campaigns in the past, such as the one that featured Keith Hernandez and Walt Frazier commenting on guys in a sports announcer manner. But I am really irritated by the current slogan. They urge men to cover up their gray hair with the line, "Let the real you come through." I cannot imagine how that got sold to the company as a clever.

The Greatest Role on Earth

The greatest actors go to great lengths to actually become the characters they are portraying. First there must be a good deal of study and preparation. He or she must KNOW the part. The most difficult portion of the job is to give up his own character in order go give life to the role he is playing.
