WAHMs, if you want to LOOK like a professional, you have to DRESS like a professional.

Why is it that we'll spend hours and hours sweating tiny decisions like the font on our web sites and then spend the better part of an hour standing in line at the post office wearing a worn-out, ragged sweatsuit we pulled out of the clothes hamper?

You CAN be a successful work-at-home-mom. But you MUST take yourself seriously.

Whether you're a budding writer, a creative crafter or a professional providing a specialized service, you CAN be a successful work at home mom. But you can only do that if you take yourself seriously. My top 5 tips are:

Ever notice?

Ever notice how the house in your neighborhood with the "No Trespassing" sign is always the one house you're least likely to ever want to enter?

And what about those people who see the face on Mars? Why is that the people most likely to see a face on Mars are the people most likely to swear that we couldn't possibly have put a man on the moon?

Share your web site horror stories.

The recent tag and ping entries plus the "where do old blogs go" post got me thinking about my first web site. (Keep in mind that this is like 1996, folks.)

I didn't build my first site (a whole story in itself) but--and I promise I'm NOT making this up--the guy who did was colorblind. So he decided to stick to black and white. Black background with white text and little weird sparkly things everywhere. Animated text, rollover effects, you name it, I had it. And, of course, it was a frames site. I get a headache just thinking about it.

Credit Card Sciatica

Men, do you keep your wallet in your back pocket? And do you sit for long periods of time?

Don't laugh. Sitting for several hours with a wallet or other bulky item in your hip pocket can put pressure on your sciatic nerve. This can lead to a painful condition that doctors only half-jokingly call "credit card sciatica", a condition that results in sharp hip or lower back pain that moves down the leg.

And Sometimes, It's All Worth It

Yesterday was a long day. Professionally, personally, it was a long day.

This morning I found this in my email:

". . . wanted to thank you for what you said to my mom. She's ready to fight and I really think she'll make it."

When Did "Natural" Come To Mean "Anti-Science"?

Dear Natural Health Movement,

Why are so many "natural" health practitioners so anti-science? Why does "un-proven" have to mean "worthless"? Can't it just mean "unproven?" When did PhD come to stand for "traitor to your peers"? Isn't the American natural health movement based on freedom of choice?

Child Safety Devices Are Underused

A study presented yesterday at a meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies found that child safety devices like bath water checkers and stair blockers are being used less than 25% of the time.

Why is this a big deal? Children in the US make over 10 million emergency room visits a year due to in-home accidents. (24,000 of these are scaldings.)

What's the dirtiest room in your house?

Here's a hint--it's probably NOT your bathroom. The dirtiest (at least in repspect to germs) is likely your kitchen. And the dirtiest area of your kitchen in probably the area around the drain in the kitchen sink.

Do Healthy "Tips" Ultimately Help or Hurt Your Weight Loss Plan?

You seem them in nearly every weight-loss book and on nearly every weight-loss web site but do little "quick tips" like "take the stairs" and "park at the far end of the parking lot" really help you lose weight? Or do they just lull you into a false sense of accomplishment?
