China allows Wikipedia and Blogspot

When I arrived in China a few weeks ago, I discovered that Blogspot and Wikipedia were not available in China. I could post my blog entries on my Blogger sites, but could not see them nor see the comments that were left. (to see the comments I had to have them sent to me for moderation)

As well, I use Wikipedia quite a bit for research for my students and found I could not access it, which meant I had to search for other resources for students of British Culture.

As of April 1st, I am reliably informed, these two sites are now open to people in this country and I have been able to access information here.

China is opening up - and I guess with the Olympic Games hype in full swing it was essential.

Thousands of Chinese people have blogs - maybe millions - but they have had to use other platforms for their thoughts and news.

It is a good sign!

to open up the web, and an equally determined Kiwi woman politician to get a FTA with the Chinese. These women now...

I agree, djbtol

the reality was that people here were accessing these sites anyway, so now it is open. Much better. (And I certainly didn't do it!)

Amazing -

the power of one woman (Elly) to bring China to its knees. With that kind of influence, I'm sure the U.S. Government would love to have you on board.

Seriously, the people of China, like everyone else, want the benefits of all internet opportunities, even though there are a few curses mixed in.
