China's Air and the Olympics

Elly has previously posted about the air pollution she has experienced in China. With the upcoming Olympics, there has been quite a bit of interest in this situation.

Today I saw a video clip of an Italian marathoner expressing concern about the athletes performing in these conditions. He sees it as a mental challenge to overcome since you will be able to feel and taste the air pollution as you breath it in.

Other than shutting down some of the major polluters for a while, I'm not sure what China can do to significantly improve air quality in a short amount of time.

The question and responsibility really falls in the hands of the International Olympic Committee.

This is the first time I've heard of this, but it makes since...I mean if I was an Olympic athlete I would not want to race in polluted air...

Athletes are concerned

about the quality of air at this time. We will have to wait and see.

China has decided that some major factories must

close around the Olympics time, and there is restrictions on motor vehicles in Beijing. It is of course a major problem that China is trying to deal with in a very short time. Spitting has been banned too. (A major polluter and health issue!)

Wouldn't you know it!

Just when it seemed that spitting might become an Olympic sport, they had to ban it for health and environmental reasons. Those athletes might just as well stay at home now!
