Chinese New Year in Fortitude Valley

Chinese New Year in Brisbane

Chinese New Year is an important festival for the Chinese. It is the fime for families to be together, and there is much celebration.

I ventured into Brisbane's Fortitude Valley which has it's own Chinatown - and tried to "take in" the feelings of the festival. The centre of the festivities, midst Chinese Restaurants, Supermarkets, Travel Shops, Butchers and other Asian stores was this venue for performers and I was there for a performance of beautiful young girls playing traditional instruments and singing Chinese songs.

(There have been considerable numbers of Chinese people in Brisbane since 1880)

Your new PM...

is a pretty astute and clever operator - in just a few weeks. Mind you he was a diplomat in China - he is a fluent Mandarin speaker _ and that has nothing to do with fruit.

Compensation won't send the lucky country...

broke. Done correctly, in a generation or so more aboriginals will become fully productive members of Aussie society - not dependant on social welfare. They will become taxpayers - not tax users! Think about that?

I think they should be compensated

We have had our own "past" here in the states and I see nothing wrong in righting a wrong...and believe me....we have many of them here......we abused the native Americans and still are....we hauled Africans here to use as slaves...not a pretty history....and we interred the Japanese.....hopefully, the American people have matured in their thinking and the future will be brighter.

Compenstion is a vexing issue

it will open the flood gates and send us broke I think. As well the records are not available - long since lost. And as many of us feel there has been millions spent and wasted already. Some ATSI groups said they were not interested in compensation, but now, it is different.

As I said - it is vexing.

I was very moved by the apology ceremony

but I think there is more to do, and better things than an apology. In some was I think our indigenous people were using it as an excuse - I understand they and many others in the history of our countries have been badly treated, in fact the treatment was horrific by today's standards. Much of the past behaviours resulted from a totally different and cruel culture. The number of people sent to Australia for minor "crimes" but in reality to populate the country with white people - sending women to the men jin Australia -whether they had been sent as prisoners, or who were soldiers. Our histories are littered with stories of abject cruelties - but no apology will every change that. I hope our indigenous people can now move on - but sadly already there are some claiming compensation because the government has admitted the errors of the past.

Trying to get a feel...

you might say?

Quite strange this whole week. The apologies to your Aboriginals by your Government, reminds me of the official apology to New Zealand's Chinese people by Helen Clark our PM,a couple of years back for the treatment they received in the 19th century.
