In recent days here in Australia our headlines in the media have carried stories about a famed football player whose behaviour has gotten him into a lot of trouble. He is facing court in Miami, USA, and Australia for some pretty low behaviour. He seems to have a problem with "anger management" according to the Miami police and apart from "glassing" his girlfriend there, and assaulting her here (I can't understand why she still remains with him!)and as a result he has lost his media jobs. Not that he is short of money - he probably doesn't need the $$)
As well other sportsmen (football players as it happens) have disgraced themselves in public recently.
What has come into question is their position in the community as "role models" especially for young people who seem to dote on any figure who gets a lot of media.
Sportspeople, actors, singers, musicians - seem to get addicted to all the hype in the media, and then can't lead "normal" lives, and many seem to then get more publicity for their antisocial, or low-life behaviour.
And still they are doted on by the young and impressionable in a way that seems to deteriorate the behaviour of young people who see the antisocial behaviour exhibited by their "heroes" as acceptable.
Currently we are experiencing awful public disobedience and violence from young people.
What role does the behaviour of these so called "role models" play in the disintegration of our society? The press? Why do they keep harping on the antisocial behaviour of moronic people?
I find it all distressing - and there's no way I will accept these people as my role models. There are far better human beings in our society who should be promoted as role models. I think we need to change our way of thinking.
