GOD-Great Bargain or Bad Investment?

The Geminian Rants:

Why does the concept of a god absorb so well into the minds of so many different people all over the world? The concept being that there exists an all-knowing, all-seeing and all-powerful being that created the universe and everything in it, including man.

There must be some great benefits for buying into it, after all, it outsells Hondas and Elmo dolls. (I’m not sure about Microsoft.) The main benefit seems to be that inside you is a spiritual reflection of you that will have everlasting life-after-death or eternally hanging out with the “big guy" in a place of perpetual happiness called Heaven.

Who wouldn't want this? The idea brings hope to hopelessness and spirituality to the psyche. It also acts as a governing and control factor that works even when no one is looking. It be-stills worries of death and promotes kindness. Strength is derived from it, enough to climb mountains, win wars and build nations. This is a great deal and everybody’s buying. The best part is that it requires not one shred of evidence. It promises everything but gives up nothing, a dream-deferred until death that, if untrue, doesn't matter because you're dead.

So why not believe? Are there negative sides to the deal that’s “too good to be true?" How about the monk who spends his entire life in silence and extreme conservatism in preparation for his ascent to Heaven? Does he not squeeze out every once of pleasure and joy from his life?

What about the seemingly unsalvageable people who were slaughtered by Moses and his people as they marched to the Promised Land?

This concept can be utilized to control or suppress millions of people at the same time for any desired purpose. It has caused more death and destruction than Hitler, drunk-driving and serial killers combined. (Abortion, however, may have it beat.)

Individually, it can convince insignificance, induce life-long confusion, and cause hatred among men. It can also enable a person to take no action against a problem in the hopes that “the Lord will intervene."

How about God’s psyche? Why would he bother creating a planet of people to worship him? Why would he continue this experiment gone wrong? Entertainment or loneliness? Why would he create all of us and then have his “chosen people?" Doesn't this all seem more like a hobby for him? What purpose does it serve to create beings to worship him? Sounds like a classic case of low self-esteem. Who could prescribe him Prozac?

Real or not, this concept can bring peace or incite riots, produce extremes in behavior in both directions, and be mood altering. The idea can be used to bring freedom or constrict it.

It is as bad as it is good. The absence of the idea that everything is beyond our control might make us realize that we have to work it out ourselves. After all, if there is no god, where does that strength come from?
