Heaps of vegetables

Well, I'm alreadying moving along to achieve some of my 2008 goals. The weather has been wet and rainy - enough to cause flooding in some parts of Queensland and New South Wales - so my exercise regime has been affected. Today I did walk for quite a while.

I found a regime that is based on fruit and vegetables, developed by Dr John Tickell, an Australian doctor whose expertise has been used in a number of television programs on weight loss that appeared on television in2006/7.

Anyway I was very interested in his ideas and they fit into my lifestyle. I love fruit and vegetables - so have made up the big saucepan of vegetable soup, and added a greater variety of fruit to my refrigerator.

I've been to Weight Watchers etc but generally don't like all the focus on foods. I can't eat as much as is generally recommended in most diets, and I am not keen on meal replacements. (Some of them are awful!)

Anyway, for the next 90 days I will be on Dr Tickell's program. Shall be interesting.

But there has to be some competition ...

in international trade. Australia gets a fair go as far as trade is concerned.I believe they supply our sugar needs now that Fiji is a minor player in the sugar trade. They probably export cricket bats and Kookaburra cricket balls here too.

Imported vegies

While some of our major grocery chains claim they try to buy Aussie grown vegies, it is surprising how much comes in from America and Asia. Don't see much NZ.

No we would export more fruit...

than veges - but no apples to Aussie for eighty years.

The apples is a big issue

as I understand our apple growers are concerned about a disease that is not in Australia, but is in apples in NZ. In any case we have plenty of our own apples I thought.

Now...

NZ does not have apple blight regardless of what Australian growers claim. They have denied NZ access to the Australian market for 80 years or so.Thet are simply scared that NZ would get a foothold in the Aussie market and may prove too competitive? That is the crux of the matter.

I agree that competition is

one of the main issues, but I can understand why the Aussie growers don't want competition in their own country as some of them may not survive.

Yes, but that's the way it is here.

Whilst we are officially still in drought in some areas, summer rains have caused major flooding in some areas, including the areas where much of the fruit and vegetables are grown. Oh, well, more imports? High prices? That's life.
