Oh, I sure hope not! But if he/she is, could you tell?
Now all of us have lied at some point, but most people are uncomfortable and bothered by telling a lie, unlike car salesmen (remember this one: How can you tell if a car salesman is lying? His lips are moving!)
The first opportunity for detection may be in the realm of communication. The lying spouse will become more evasive and reluctant to converse freely. They know that the more they say, the more likely they will be forced to tell the truth, or maybe conjure up some more lies.
Body language may also be key in spotting a deceiving spouse. Are you seeing these physical indications (more than once or twice, of course).
1. Covering the mouth while talking
2. Touching the nose (Hey Pinocchio, did you know that lying can cause the tissue in the nose to swell?)
3. Rubbing an eye. This is not as obvious as looking elsewhere or hiding your face in shame.
4. Touching an ear. They might even yank an ear lobe.
5. Going for the neck. Maybe scratching or pulling the collar. Some have shown that lying can cause a tingling in the tissues of the neck.
6. Shaking the head no while saying yes. This mixed message is hard to send. If you see it, take notice!
Maintaining an atmosphere of loving kindness, acceptance and forgiveness in a marriage is important for helping either spouse avoid the destructive path of lying.
