Its or It's

Today at work a colleague asked me about the correct usage of the often confused words its and it's. When do you use the apostrophe? I am embarrassed to say that I did not remember. Of course I would not remember from my school days, but I have most likely reviewed this with my children. This episode of ignorance will never happen again, I think!

Quite simply:

Its is the possessive pronoun, showing ownership.

It's is the contracted form of 'It is' or 'It has'

To conclude this lesson, here is a simple example.

What is its color? It's green. It's been a long, long time.

There have been moves to delete the apostrophe from the English language - and now many campaigners to save it!
