Lawnmower Time Again -- Watch Out For Little Children

Not a day passes this time of year that I don't hear the sound of at least one lawnmower busily mowing the grass which which grows so rapidly this time of year.

About a year ago, I wrote a blog entry about a man in our town who went out to try his new John Deere Mower, and didn't realize his small daughter had followed him. He mowed up to a fence and then put the mower in reverse and backed over the little girl, severing one of her legs at the hip.

This was a terrible tragedy, which could have been so easily avoided. Now not only the little girl but her whole family will be affected by the accident for the rest of their lives.

The purpose of this blog entry is just to remind you, not to let a similar accident happen to one of your loved ones. When you mow, make sure someone is keeping chidren inside the house.

And remember, mowers not only cause accidents like the one I described, but they also pick up loose rocks, twigs, and other items and throw them long distances.

Educate every member of the family to stay as far as possible from an operating mower unless they are the one doing the operating.

Have a safe and happy summer.

* Fortunately, the little girl has done well and is able to use her new artificial leg quite well.

In Tucson We don't have lawns

Good reminder for people as power mowers can be dangerous around children. It is important to watch young children carefully and teach them to be careful. I always kept a close eye on my two when they were young - but the lawnmower was never a problem as grass lawns are rare in Tucson, Arizona.

I loved visiting Tucson, Airnavigator, but missed the

green of Oregon. I remember visiting an old airplane museum near Tucson, but can't remember the name of it. Pima, maybe.
Anyway they had really old, some even falling apart, airplanes and iit was fascinating. Is it near you?

The name of the museum is the Pima Air Museum

The museum is a major attraction in Tucson and has a large and growing collection of old airplanes, mostly American military planes, but does have a few commercial planes and a collection of Russian Migs. Included in their collection is the USAF T-29 trainer plane like the one that I flew in while in air navigation training as well as some KC-97 air tankers (like the one in my profile picture) like the ones that I flew while in the Wisconsin Air National Guard. They also have a couple of the Soviet MiG fighters that my father-in-law flew and commanded a squadron of during the Cold War. Here is a link to an article I wrote, with photos, on my HubPages blog describing a recent trip to the Museum where we took pictures of my wife, son, and step-son posing in front of the planes my father-in-law flew and that I flew to send to my father-in-law for his birthday.

Airnavigator, your link under "article" isn't working but I went

to your "My HubPages" link and read the Pima Air Museum article. Very interesting, as were many of your other articles. You must have been writing for a long time.

That is so true, Jellen

Small children are too young to realize that Daddy may not see them if they walk behind a mower or car. Sometimes I wonder how any children ever manage to survive childhood.

Mowers and cars

Both have a reverse. I read an article last week about a pediatrician who backed up over his 2 yr. old and killed the little boy. Tragic. We must always be super aware when backing up.
