One thing that fascinates me here is the time, effort and expense on the gardens in the college. Every few weeks the "fower pot men" as we call the gardeners load their little carts with pots of plants that are ready to bloom and they are distributed around the college. Near the main gate of the college is a wonderful display of flowers in pots, and near the West Gate which is the most used entrance and exit to the college there is always a wonderful display. Along the roadways from the West Gate, in front of the canteens, in front of the Library, and in front of other important buildings on the campus there will be wonderful displays of flowers in bloom or about to bloom.
As it is early winter it is time for the Chrysanthemums. Actually in this Province is a city that is the Chrystanthemum city - where there are apparently huge displays of these flowers.
The large pots are not just one plant - but a plant on which several varieties have been "grafted" so that from one plant there are several different coloured blooms.
In the smaller pots there are bamboo rings on which the stems with the buds attached are held in place so that the display of flowers is far more impressive.
There are huge white blooms, yellow, mauve, pink and golden ones. As I have had an interested in flowers (our family did have our own flower farm for a while), I find it extremely fascinating. The locals think my interest in photographing them is curious.
I have never seen such healthy specimens of Chrystanthemums, and the seem to flower for quite a long period here.
In Australia we associate them with Mother's Day which is in May - the peak season for these flowers.
