Snake strangles 2 year old girl.

It is a world of the bizarre and whacko stories, and this one is amongst the worst stories in the media at the moment.

No doubt it is a warning to those people who choose to keep exotic animals or reptiles in the house, but there will be a lot of questions asked over how a snake could escape from it's glassed pen and attack and kill a 2 year old.

The snake was found wrapped around the body of the little girl, and the owner had to stab it to release the girl, but it was too late for her.

There's probably no story about neglect, it may be just a bizarre event, but we've learned from recent events that keeping animals in our homes, that should be left in the wild or in zoo's can result in awful tragedies.

I have read

of other incidents like that one. People buy dangerous pets and then try to mix them with their children. I feel the same way about Pit Bulls and other dangerous dog breeds....Once an animal attacks a child...too often it ihas a heartbreaking result. One of my sons dated a very pretty girl with a future as a model.. She had already modelled for some major publications. A Chow bit her on the cheek and torn her face so badly, that it ended her career. She was 15 at the time.

Such a waste, Elly

an innocent child crushed by the ignorance of the parents!

There are some animals which are not...

suitable as pets, and certainly not in a home with young children. That is why we have strict policies in NZ. There is a time and a place for certain things. There are zoos and animal parks for those animals. This was a tragic incident which should never have happened.

That is so sad Elly.

I knew a young couple once that had a boa for a pet--and a young daughter. When I expressed my concern, they insisted the arrangement was perfectly safe, and insinuated that I was a meddling busybody. The top of the snake cage was just a piece of glass that any toddler could have knocked off. It still makes me shudder to think about it, after more than 20 years.
