Suspending the gas tax

Hillary Clinton is proposing suspending the gas tax for the summer months. While Barack Obama is saying it’s just a election year ploy. All the economists seem too agree with Obama saying it’s bad economic policy. Personally I agree with Hillary lets suspend the gas tax on consumers and make the oil industry pay. Suspending the gas tax will lower the cost by a few pennies a gallon. I know that’s not much but it’s something.

Of course Hillary and Barack both have long term energy policy’s they just disagree about the quick fix on gas prices this summer.

Anyway thanks for reading

We have similar taxes...

Yea I know it's not easy

Yea I know it's not easy huttriver but something has too be done...Personally I’m spending 10 dollars a day just to get back and fourth too work...

Hillary want's the oil

Hillary want's the oil industry to pick up the tax bill over the summer months....So the tax revenue would still be there too pay for road work and the like....

I doubt very much that would ever happen. That would be like

passing a law that the tax on our houses be picked up by the house builders for 3 months this summer. It doesn't sound like it could be required legally.

It's not going too happen

It's not going too happen Jeanne...but it's nice that a politician understands the effect these high gas prices are having on people like myself

The gas tax is supposed to be used to repair highways, Toad.

To give us a gas tax holiday, will they lay off the road crews who usually do these repairs in the summer when the weather is most favorable for it? That would just put a lot more families on unemployment. I don't see how suspending the gas tax would bother oil companies at all--they don't get that money anyway.

From a practical standpoint -

I'm all for reducing the gas tax. The high prices really hurt between paychecks. I think the Federal tax alone is something like 18 cents per gallon, and some states have talked about cutting their tax as well.

From a higher level, though, two things bother me:

First, no one has said anything about what this loss of tax revenue will mean. Can we afford to do without this revenue? Either there is an impact, or the tax suspension should be permanent.

Secondly, what happens at the end of summer? The tax goes back in place and the gas prices go up again. What was accomplished?
