Here in China our English students choose an English name. This is to make it easy for the English teacher, and help us to ensure that the right student gets the right marks. We cannot easily write or recognise Chinese characters (writing) and even writing in Pinyin is difficult.

The China Daily website is one of my daily reads. As I can't read the local newspapers, I find this site helpful in keeping up to date with things in China. They do have printed newspaper, but I would have to go into the city to find one. The website is easier - despite my Internet woes.

I was out with one of my students and she was uncomfortable about it. "People just STARE at you." she said with an emphasis on the word STARE.

It doesn't matter what I do outside the college campus I am always watched or stared at. I'm used to it. It does unnerve my students however, but I can laugh it off. Initially it was a bit hard to take.

Wine and "inkohol"

One of the things that I miss is a good glass of wine. Here in China it is hard to come by. And expensive if you can buy some.

My friends all enjoy a beer, but they too are keen to get home for a glass of real beer rather than the pale weak beer that is available here. In any case I do not like beer. I have tried it - but I just can't do it. I'd rather go thirsty!

Last night three students appeared at my apartment to give me and another Aussie teacher a gift for helping them at "Translation Club" - which was delightful. One of the boys had worked out that my favourite colour was purple and they bought a lovely purple scarf for me.

In Australia we have very little celebration of Halloween, although a local suburb has a big parade on October 31st, which they did last night, but in reality we Aussies have in the past paid little attention to this festival.

The wealthiest person in China

BE readers have been discussing the great gulf between those folk who are extremely wealthy and those who are poor. I thought there might be interest in this information.

Firstly, might I saw that as visitors to this country we have been amazed at the number of high priced designer retailers that are here in China. I know there is a huge population, but to see the Rolexes,Gucci, Ferragamo, Hugo Boss, Bally,Omega, Kenzo and so forth in the cities it makes you wonder.
