Off The Very Southwest tip of Land’s End, in Cornwall, England, there lies nothing but water and a few small islands called the Scilly Isles. Legend says that under the fierce Atlantic Ocean waves rests the remains of a beautiful old kingdom called Lyonesse(Camelot). It is a kingdom steeped in the legends of King Arthur and was once overcome by a great flood. The Locals believe that if you look in the right direction at low tide you can even see the submerged towers and domes. Lyonesse they said to be a great country that contained magnificent cities and stretched to the distant west off Land’s End, from St Michael’s Mount to beyond the Scilly Isles. There were supposed to be 140 churches in the country, and great forests covering the area. However, on 11th November 1099 a terrible flood raged over the land, drowning all but one of the inhabitants. This single survivor was a man called Trevilian, who saw the waves coming and rode his horse to safety on higher ground. The Trevlyan coat of arms still shows a white horse rising from the sea, but the cities of Lyonesse were lost forever, and only the highest points of the kingdom peaked through the waves. At a distance of 20 miles from Land’s End, we now know these summits as the Scilly Isles.

The True Story of The Man of Iron Mask

Here it is the true history of the “The Man of Iron Mask”; The Bastilha, was constructed in 1370 and became an arrest during the reign of Carlos VI; during the Regency of Richelieu Cardinal, in century XVII, an arrest for noblemen became or scholars, opponents to the official religion, adversaries politicians, agitators politicians, etc. In day 14 of July of 1789 the people of Paris left to the streets and invaded the Bastilha, that symbolized the Real Absolutism, freeing its 7 prisoners. This fact was known as " The Fall of the Bastilha" , it dates commemorated for the Frenchmen. By 1679 return, during the reign of Luis XIV, a prisoner was placed under the personal responsibility of Mr. De Saint-Mars, at the time, was commander of the Fort and arrest of Pignerol, in the Savóia. The prisoner, without any official register of the arrest, beyond the name, had its unknown age, being simply, for its friends and the jailers of the arrest, as being "The Man of Iron Mask ". He was without a doubt some, it are of the common one, exactly for the places, where odd figures were " Stored" , the peculariety of this prisoner, the requint of badness, in one tortures, parently not painful, but infinitely it bothers; therefore the face of the prisoner was total hidden under a species of mask made velvety black, on mechanically to one " collar" of iron, whose mechanism, disabled its removal without aid of somebody. Subterrades in volcanic mud, has 2000 years, these old cities of Roman, together summering almost at bay of Naples, emerged of its long sleep, as one of the richest archaeological discoveries of all the times. To the dawn of day 24 of August of 79 d.C, nobody could guess the catastrophe that will be to happen. The bay was blue and seemed a mirror, at least not having a cloud in the sky. Although already direction was had, it has some a few days ago, fast land tremors, in the neighborhood. Such tremors were not rare and could become violent, but nothing of very serious. In that morning, in Herculano was celebrated festivitys in homage to the August Emperor (deceased á much time), having games, theater… the streets had enormous frenesim human. Suddenly a violent sound cleaved airs, the ground it trembled and was breached, the light of the Sun was hidden for behind of a cinereous fog, that suffocated the nostrils and suddenly, a gigantic cloud with mushroom form, raised it the sky. The terror swept the streets and all the part, was it “saves who will be able”.

This is quite a bizarre story. And I will start from the beginning. Today, midafternoon, sirens started blaring in the grounds of the university. They would stop, then start again. It sounded very much like Air Raid Sirens, and so much out of place here. Everyone seemed to go about their own business as if the deafening siren was not blaring. I asked a few students and no one seemed to know. Or care. Odd, I thought.

I was recently asked when did New Zealand gain full independemce from Britain?

Lets read a bit of background material and history about New Zealand, the small dual island nation in the South Pacific,about 1200 miles or 2,000 km from Australia. I say dual island because the two main islands are still known as the South Island and the North Island. The south is the larger of the two, but the North has about two thirds of the population, with the capital city being Wellington, at the bottom of the North Island.

Reading 1776, Pulitzer Prize winning author David McCullough, made me realize just how close we Americans came to continuing as a British colony for a long time.

McCullough did a masterful job in compiling and presenting the records and papers of important men and bodies on both the British and American sides of the matter of independence. The descriptions of both the noble traits and the frailties of the key player in the pivotal year were very enlightening. I had always held George Washington to be a man of almost superhuman strengths. To read of his indecisions and misjudgments, as well as the intrigue on the part of some of his staff, made the story of our independence even more a thing to be cherished as a gift!

Australia has a 200 year old history of European settlement, and I can recall when I was in England and Ireland in 2005, how overwhelmed I was to see old castles, buildings, and historic pieces of hundreds of years of age. How am I going to feel when I see and touch things that are over 2000 years old? Chinese history goes back 5000 years! And there is much in the country that is as it was thousands of years ago. The Great Wall of China was started 2000 years ago!
