The Celtic Tree of Life, represented in many ways, a few you can see here. I received these gifts for Christmas this year because I've always had a slight obession for the figure of the tree and the celtic way.
Not only did trees provide food, shelter, warmth and fuel for the celts, they were also believed to have much greater powers. Different trees served different purposes, some for food, some to make weapons, others were sacred to fairies or gods. Certain trees were known to be gateways into other, more magical worlds, like those of fairies and other mythical creatures.
The Oak tree is the most sacred tree of all, being the center of the world. The roots of the oak tree were the door to the "otherworld." The celtic word for oak is daur which is where our word door originiated.
You may be able to see the celtic knots worked into the trees on my journal or box. These ancient designes could represent sacred trees or animals, even gods. However, their true meaning is unknown, the celts left little in written record, and the symbols have since been adapted to suit Christianity.
