The Chinese milk scandal is despicable and disgusting - dead and ill babies...

The Chinese Sanlu/ Baidu milk scandal is despicable and disgusting to say the least - 3 dead babies, 150 with kidney failure and another 6,244 taken ill. Those responsible will ultimately pay with their lives in China!

It is so bloody embarrassing for us in New Zealand that our dairy food company Fonterra, the sixth largest in the world, has a 43% joint venture with Sanlu and kept things quiet for 45 days, before the New Zealand government spilt the beans on them and made the scandal public here.

It wasn't a good start to our free trade relationship with China, even if it wasn't Fontera's fault and it didn't involve NZ milk.

It is guilt by association, as they say. The chairperson of Sanlu and 18 other company members have just been arrested by Chinese authorities.

There is an old saying: If you want to sup with the devil make sure you have a long spoon!

A huge tragedy

and this is just one of the stories in recent days about the corruption in China. The fault lies with whoever told the farmers that putting melamine in with water to increase the volume of "milk" was permissable. Sad that NZ milk is "contaminated" by association, but China is fast learning (probably not fast enough) that it does not pay to cut corners to make money. The mine disaster of a few days ago is another case in point. Some folk want to make BIG money FAST, and not consider the consequence. There was MATTEL earlier in the year with the lead paint in toys, the list goes on.

Greed is a human condition --

Not a national one. Corruption is a means of serving self over the good of others. Someone stood to gain financially.

It is a very sad day for the nation, but more so for those who have lost health, life, or lives of loved ones.
