Almost 100 years ago, the most amazing bit of Christmas magic occurred. It was during World War I, on the Christmas eve of 1914. On the Flanders battlefield, the Germans against the British and French, each side was dug in to their nearly 8 foot deep trenches, between them only “no mans land”.
On any other occasion, on any other night, in any other war, and certainly in any other battle to venture out into “no mans land” would have meant certain death to the fool who tried. But this Christmas eve was different.
From the safety of the British/ French trenches they could see the Germans, beginning to place small Christmas trees with lit candles outside their trenches. Soon carols could be heard ringing from either side, sung in German, French and English.
Many of the German soldiers could speak a bit of English and then came their request for a “Christmas Truce.” During WWI, in the midst of fierce battles, death and hate- men rose from their trenches to meet with them enemies in “no mans land.” It’s said that 100’s if not 1000’s of soldiers experienced the night, laughing with their enemy, sharing gifts and cigarettes.
In the midst of a war, these sworn foes came together, in the true spirit of Christmas. They let their battles go, for at least one night.
