The Earthquake in China

It is almost a week since the devastating earthquake in China - where the frenzied work continues to save any survivors, and start on the major task of rebuilding the homes, schools and lives of the millions who have been affected.

The numbers are boggling - and it is hard to imagine. Whole villages, whole families, whole schools and more have been wiped out.

If the west are watching the news unfold, as we do here on television where there is little else but information on the drama in Sichuan province, everyone will see the extra ordinary measures taken to do the best they can for the people there.

I think there are some 153,000 military personnel working in the area, there are thousands and thousands of volunteers, tent cities have sprung up and there are plans to start immediately in more substantial housing. Food, clothing, and clean water are being provided. The rescue mission is on a grand scale and the Chinese Government is to be congratulated in the way they have responded.

Of course many people's lives will never be the same. The Government is now looking at more stringent building codes (one very good thing to come out of this), and there are plans for long term support for those who have lost everything.

The Chinese people have rallied in support of their country folk in Sichuan, and all are feeling the pain of what happened. It is a natural disaster on a mammoth scale and it will take a long time before the last rescue workers are finished their work.

If you can help in any way by donating to Red Cross or any other organisation it will help.

Yes, I agree...

Yes, many families do

have two children. Many families choose to pay the fine.

Interesting points...

and as an aside, India is poised to pass China's population in a few years because there is no one child policy there.

Maybe one day

India will have to consider it too.

One child in the cities

but in many country areas they have more than one. I have been told that it is easier to hide a pregnancy in the country and when the baby arrives the woman pays a fine but still keeps the baby or pretends it belongs to someone else.

Yes, Hutts it is true

especially as the schools were the hardest hit and many of the deaths are in schools that have collapsed. Many families have lost their only heir and some may never have another child. However, the one child policy may still serve the country well, as they are struggling to keep up the infrastructure for a large population. In any case, it may be that two children of a family would have died in such a disaster.

China's one child policy...

has come back to haunt them. To lose your only child, you have no family left.
