The Foggy History Of V-Day

So you celebrate (or refuse to celebrate) Valentine’s Day on February 14; but February 14 is only one of many “Valentine’s Days” recognized by the Catholic Church. Let’s see there January 7, May 2, July 16, August 31, September 2, October 25, November 1, November 3, November 13, and December 16. Geez!! There are a lot of saints named Valentine, which leads me to believe that if you name your child “Valentine” they’re destined for Sainthood!

I cannot begin to filter through the various legends and myths floating around about the origin of the February 14, Valentine’s Day. We can be fairly sure that it started with a martyr and that’s really all I’m willing to say on that subject!

The way we celebrate Valentine’s Day today began in the Middle Ages. I didn’t know Hallmark was around in the Middle Ages? This was when the practice of courting or dating became prevalent in society.

I think Valentines is for the young

Young lovers etc. although it has been quite commercialised here. It is one of the biggest sales days for florists. Where are my flowers??

I delivered flowers for

I delivered flowers for about 8 years, so I never really got to enjoy a real Valentine's Day with my wife. The week of Valentine's, we were all working 14-17 hour days the whole week. But I always got a pretty good deal on roses to bring home to her...the only problem was some unfortunate sap didn't get the ones he ordered because I took 'em. haha..just kidding. But yeah...it's just a card company and flower shop holiday. Roses were like three times more expensive the weeks leading up to V-Day than they were rest of the year.
