The Legend Of The Banshee

I’ve always found Irish tales or mythology to be just about the most interesting and romantic. I think it’s the mystery, even with the internet today- and how “small” the world has become, the mysteries of Ireland still seem to be hidden within the minds and hearts of her locals.

The Irish put a great weight on tradition, family and history. As in the legend of the Banshee. It is said that the banshee is to only cry for the five oldest and most prominent families in Ireland. The O’ Neills, O’Briens, O’ Connors, O’Grady’s and Kavanaghs.
What I wouldn’t give to be one of those families! I’ve immersed myself in the history, tradition and culture of Ireland- perhaps my mother’s maiden name of Scanlon is on the extended list? I can wish.

In keeping up with the lucky number three of the Irish, the banshee will (usually) appear as one of three women. A young lady, a dignified matron or a worn old hag. Wearing either a hooded cloak, a sheet or robe.

The banshee has also been described as a laundry woman, washing the blood from the clothes of those who are about to die. Which brings us to the purpose of the banshee.

The banshee’s cry or call is to warn these 5 families of an oncoming death. Different areas of Ireland describe the banshee’s cry in their own way. In some area’s it’s said to be a shrill sound able to shatter glass, other’s the call is a deep and pleasant singing, some hear it as wooden boards being struck together, or like the wail of an owl. Still, other legends say that the banshee herself is actually an soul still bound to the earth. If during life the banshee loved the family that she is bound to her cry will be heard as soothing and tender. If the banshee was the enemy of the family it will sound like a demonic scream or howl.

King James I of Scotland’s death was forewarned by the cry “human banshee” who, as legend has it, told him that he would die at the hands of Earl of Atholl. Walter Stewart, The First Earl of Atholl assassinated James I in an attempt to gain power, it failed, as he was captured and executed for his deed.

Log into your ad sense

Log into your ad sense account.

Click on the “Adsense Setup” tab

Select “Adsense for Content”

I selected “Ad Units”, then click continue

For “Format” I selected, well honestly I can’t recall- I either did banner or half banner.
You can fool around til you find what you like.

Anyway, under “colors” I selected the “Open Air” palette and then tried to match the colors as best I could to the BE ad colors

Click continue, select or make a channel if you so wish, then click continue again.

There’s your code.

I took jellen’s advice and copied it into “Word” so I could paste it into my posts easily, when ever I needed it.

It involves going into Adsense setup...

I helped Muse with it and I do not remember the post. Maybe she can find it and quote it. I like my extra ad at the bottom of the blog, but perhaps Muse will get more clicks in the middle of a post.

I have tracked one family member

back to Ireland - although he was an Englishman. He apparently spent time living in Enniskillen. I didn't find that out until some time after I returned from my trip there.

I'm part Irish

and I too love the Irish tales. If I were one of the Banshee I would probably be the old hag!
