The One Child Policy

Folk in the west are curious about the policy in China of allowing only one child per family. This country with a massive population already, believes that without this policy, there would be a further 400 million people.

The population already challenges the authorities to provide health and education, and one reason to continue with this policy is that health and education facilities would be not as freely available.

But with the policy comes an ageing population and the high cost of caring for the elderly.

The May 12th earthquake has also raised questions about the policy as so many children died, and families are left childless now. Those who are of child bearing age might be able to "replace" their lost child, but some are beyond child bearing age.

There is an interesting article here. which also explains some of the "new rules" for the grieving families of Sichuan.

I met a man the other day, a civil servant, with one child. If he and his wife should have another child he would lose his job. The rule is strictly adhered to here.

Even in a socialist government -

where the government attempts to provide education and health care, the money eventually runs out. Government is limited in ability and the people's money.

I think so

and the west is so critical of almost everything that China does. Certainly the one child policy was to slow down the birth rate as it was alarmingly high and they couldn't cope. It is something that is continually being reviewed. I think other countries (third world etc) could also benefit from such a policy, especially those that cannot feed the children they are currently breeding.
