The Preacher's Best Friend

Every congregation seems to have at least one "preacher's best friend". Some have more than one. Let me describe this unusual soul.

Most often this person is female, but not always, and frequently is over 50 years old. She is invariably sensitive and considerate. She is the one who unexpectedly comes by the preacher, pats him on the back and gives him a sincere word of encouragement. She always has a warm smile and a bright countenance.

The reason she becomes the "preacher's best friend" is that she never joins in with the group who spend their time nit-picking and fault-finding. She is never a discourager, but always encourages. Her words are like a breath of fresh air. And the preacher will make a point of greeting her in hope she will remember to pat him on the back once again.

Proverbs 31:26 "In her tongue is the law of kindness"

To be honest -

I sit and ponder how I might comment on this, or if I should. My first thoughts were too negative by my own assessment. Obviously, this indicates work needed in my own heart.

I fully agree that the Preacher needs encouragement, just as everyone else in the congregation. And our words are to edify and build up.

You have my permission to stop reading here.

As we consider the preacher's friend, is their kindness towards the preacher fully sincere?

Have they been raised to always trust and encourage the pastor, not matter what he says or does?

Does the preacher's friend even understand the merits of the discussions that others are having, or have they just turned a deaf ear?

Is "the law of kindness" always on their tongue - home, work, play and church?

I think I may have the topic for another post, djbtol

It would be about a disease I call preacheritis! It can be very detrimental to the well being of an entire congregation. I fight against it at every opportunity.

Thanks for the perspective!
