The pro-marijuana lobby in NZ received a huge setback in parliament last night. A bill proposing the legalisation of cannabis based medicines was rejected and failed to get past the first reading to the committee stage, where public submissions could have been heard.
It proved one thing, Kiwis are very conservative in matters dealing with drugs, even if this was for cannabis based medicine. There has been a lot of lobbying for the legalisation of a 'minimum amount' of marijuana for personal use as well in recent years. If they can't get medicines legalised they certainly won't see personal use allowed either!
It was, in my book, a great decision by our lawmakers and credit to commonsense. Marijuana, cannabis, dope, hash or whatever it may be called, is actually one of the most insidious forms of drugs out there - it slowly works on user's braincells slowly making them dopey, and incapable in time of making good, sensible and mature decisions.
Yes, a great day in the New Zealand Parliament. I'm no conservative by any stretch of the imagination, but that was a great decision!

My brother an Oncologist
saw a lot of 60s hippies who had lung cancer from smoking the stuff and he saw people who had developed dementia in their 40s because of drug use....the same can be said for the use of alcohol.....people who drink heavily have liver problems.....
It irks me that people want to imbibe in their fsvorite rec drug such as alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, or worse....and then wonder why they have a poor quallity of life....they whine and complain about how unfortunate they are to be suffering from Cancer...Cirosis (sp? too early to think).....heart disease and such.....they get the government to pay for it.......and it's all because they want their cake and eat it too.
Get responsible and live life without all of the crutches.
And then become a burden...
on the health system.

As one who has NEVER tried it,
I applaud the NZ Government. As a nurse I saw some of the results of these so called "safe recreational drugs" and nothing has convinced me that they are safe or should be used for fun.
