The United States policy when dealing with Cuban exiles

When dealing with Cuban exiles the United States has a policy often called the “wet foot” “dry foot” and more recently a new category called “dusty foot”. Let me explain what this means

First is a “wet foot” exile. A “wet foot” exile is someone who is picked up usually by the coast guard while at sea. A “wet foot” exile is not allowed entrance into the United States and is sent back too Cuba.

Second is a “dry foot” exile. A “dry foot” exile is someone who was able to avoid detection and has landed on American soil usually in South Florida. A “dry foot” exile is welcome too stay in the United States.

Third is a “dusty foot” exile. A dusty foot exile is a Cuban who has entered the United States by crossing the Mexican boarder usually into Texas. A “dusty foot” exile is welcome to stay in the United States.

There have been Cuban exiles who were tackled by police while in ankle deep water in Florida and have been sent back too Cuba. While there have been other Cubans who have out run the police and made it too dry land for only a few seconds before being caught. Because they made it too dry land their allowed to stay while their slower running friends were sent back to Cuba.

Yes it is a strange policy

Yes it is a strange policy huttriver...and in a way they are discrimitory...I mean if your young and a good swimmer your welcome to stay If your older and unable too swim well you have to go back...Personally I don't like this policy at all..

Interesting isn't it, Toad?

I would be sent back for sure, unless I could try the dusty foot route. I have an innocent face so I could probably walk right across the border without anyone even questioning me. In fact, I have done just that, several times. On various trips to Mexico, we have left our car on the U.S. side and walked across the border. Coming back, they usually don't say much unless we are loaded down with purchases. Even then, they don't usually search us--they just ask us verbally what kinds of things we bought and how much we spent. Oh, yes--they also want to know if we are a citizen or not. I haven't been there for a couple of years so they may be a little stricter now.

I think I would prefer the

I think I would prefer the dusty foot route also...Floating in a raft for God nows how long would scare the heck out of me....
