As the polls indicated, there has been a swing to the right after the electorate demanded change!
The rightwing National Party has beaten left of centre Labour by about 16 seats on election night. Final figures in an MMP electoral system could take some time until special votes are gathered and counted.
The beaten prime minister of the Labour led Government for nine years, Helen Clark, has also stood down as leader of the Labour Party, after fifteen years.
The future of politics and policies in New Zealand are unclear, but fears are held for many social gains of the last nine years. While I and other supporters of the left in NZ are devastated, you just cannot stay in power for ever. There are inevitable cyclical changes in any country.
While the US and Australia have swung politically to the left, New Zealand has swung to the right. It will be interesting to see any political moves in Britain in coming months.
Not much apart from rhetoric will actually happen until the budget in the middle of next year - 2009.
I now emphathise with those in the US and Australia who have had to endure political change in their own countries. You cannot stop the winds of change as they blow across the political landscape.
