Unconditional Love, You Say?

Is there a more fitting day than the day of the Mother to speak of the ideal coined Unconditional Love? Is anybody actually capable of offering up some of that good old unconditional love joo joo?

A friend? A spouse? That team you play on each week at the YMCA? Your preacher? The kid that you babysit?

Perhaps. Though I wonder if your dog is more likely to serve up the unconditinal love.

I often wonder if unconditional love can only be born out of biology. You know, the stuff that mothers, fathers, and children share. That seemingly blind yet wonderful state of unquestioning love and attachment at such a deep level that it merits it's own 'mystery clause' when attempts at explaining it with reason fail.

Unconditional love is not a rational thing. It is a mystery that leads to love even in the face of terrible actions. If I am married and I cheat, my wife will likely feel a diminished love for me. Understandably. Yet, my mother will only be disappointed in me. She will still love me, unwaveringly.

Unconditional love, like so many things unexplained in this funny life, is a mystery.
