Underdog Kiwis whipped the Kangaroos in Rugby League World Cup final...

New Zealand are undoubted kings of rugby union, despite world cup setbacks, but as the underdogs our Kiwis whipped the Aussie Kangaroos 34-20 for the first time ever in this year's Rugby League World Cup finals in front of a crowd of 50,000 at Suncorp Stadium at Brisbane, Australia during the weekend. They had been soundly thrashed in the preliminary round a month ago. NZ had also lost its previous 13 games against Australia; so the turnaround in fortunes was huge.

For those familiar with any sporting code, if you put the opposition under real pressure they are liable to make mistakes at crucial times in a match; that is actually what happened on Saturday night.

It was the New Zealand 'Kiwis' first Rugby League World Cup finals success in 54 years, despite twice being runners up, and their first win against Australia since the Tri Nations win in 2005 in England.

It will be something they can cherish and enjoy the bragging rights for the next five years. Oh yes!

Thanks Jeanne and Elly...

a bit of cheer as the economic situation deterioates. And I have heard of the Ducks too, Jeanne. Elly will become a fan when the Aussies take back the cup in five years. Actually some of the Aussies are becoming a sad bunch as the realisation sets in. The Aussies are inclined to treat us as little brothers at times; if only our cricketers could make it too. Got to leave our Aussie cousins with some bragging rights. LOL

The young league players are getting excited...

and I wouldn't mind betting that a few will go over from rugby to league next season.

Hutt, you have my permission to brag as long as you like.

We don't have much rugby here, but our football games draw thousands.

When people find out my husband and I both graduated from the University of Oregon, they assume that we are rabid Duck fans. (Ducks, being the unlikely name of the UofO football team.)

Since we were married with two small children when we went to college there, we were so busy working, studying, and watching our girls that we never had time to develop an interest in the sport and both graduated never having attended a single game.

Not that I don't notice when the Ducks win a game, or have a chance at a bowl game, or when the yearly "Civil War" game with our rival "Beavers" from Oregon State University is coming up, but we still have never attended a single game.

Lest you think we have no school spirit, I hasten to add that we often give our grandchildren, who ARE rabid Duck fans, Duck T-shirts, sweatshirts, flags, etc. for birthday and Christmas gifts. Couldn't have them running around in Beaver attire, could we?

OK, OK Congratulations to the Kiwis

not that I have any great interest in rugby anyway. Should make the Kiwi's crow. Do they?
