At one point in an earlier lifetime, I conceived the idea of forming a freelance registry to assist writers and artists to find available jobs. At the time, it was a novel concept and was quite successful. As a writer, I knew most of us were hard up for cash, and never charged for signing up. I took a small commission when I booked assignments for them, and that was it.
I mention this only to warn those of you who are seeking freelance work to avoid certain websites that promise to find work for you. Most heinous of these is Guru.com which offer a "free" membership, lists dozens of great-sounding jobs, but allows only paid members to bid on them! And membership is not cheap. Writers are asked for 75 bucks a quarter for the privilege of bidding on what I suspect are largely non-existent jobs. Other creative professionals are charged as much as $100 a quarter just to register.
So, a word to the wise: do NOT register with Guru.com, unless you enjoy throwing your money at venal, dishonest people who make a living by preying on trusting innocents.
