What are these?

Last night I had a late phone call from some students. They had a gift for me. Inside the plastic bag was quite a collection of these things. I had seen them, but had no idea what they were. All I know is that one breaks them open and eats the contents.

Has anyone seen them before?

I asked my grandsons, Elly

The seven year old said he had not seen anything like that while in Shanghai, he thought they looked like moths. The eight year old then came in and agreed that they had not eaten anything like these. He agreed it looked like bats. My guess is something like the base of a flower and that part you eat is a seed or something similar. Is it roasted/cooked?

Hard to tell isn't it.

I'll post a photo of them after being cut open. These four little "bats" are sitting on an A4 sheet of paper. They are about 1 1/2 inches long. Fascinating really.

Yes, they can be eaten.

My students gave me a Chinese/pinyin name for them, but I cannot find it anywhere. Not even Wikipedia! Odd. Ithought maybe someone would know them. I'll add information as I find it.
