What are your thoughts on nuclear power?

A report has been released in Australia suggesting that the country needs 25 nuclear power stations to be built in the near future to provide the power needs of the country, and reduce the gases that coal-fired electricity generations causes.

I know many countries in the world have nuclear power stations and I understand some are rethinking.

I need more inforamtion BEFORE I can decide my support of either side. I can see the value in nuclear power, and there is concern that one day the worlds coal reserves will be used up, and there is the issue with greenhouse gases.

I'd be interested in others' thoughts on the topic.

Haven't we learned anything

from Chernoble? (sp?) The plants leak and it kills everything around it. Surely with our brilliance in miniaturization they can come up with smaller units used to produce more energy without all of the waste by-products.

Yes, Chernobyl

I've seen film of the area all around it - and I don't think the west really found out ALL about it. But one thing is for sure, we have an insatiable appetite for electricity and our current electricity generation produces pollution plus, and there are doubts about long term. Any one for wind as an energy source - and anyone who lives near the wind farms is not happy about them. Massive noise pollution.

Where I live

we rarely have any wind at all, so windmills would only solve the problem for about 5 days out of the year. If they could harness humidity we would be rich!!!

Thank you djbtol, for your input

I was intereted to hear the comments from a professor from Finland who is speaking at a big function in Sydney tomorrow night. His concern was the long life of the nuclear waste, and leaving it for future generations. He is concerned that long term there could be great risks for life on earth. I thought his comments were very interesting.

That is correct -

As I understand it the waste, at least a portion of it, is a long term proposition. I think they generally bury it (in appropriate containers) deep underground. Maybe not always.

I tend to think

that nuclear power will continue to be a piece of the power puzzle. We've been using it quite a long time now and I think we know how to do it safely. The whole process of regulatory control should be reviewed to make sure it is being done in the best way. The industry is very heavily regulated and we need to make sure that the regulatory burden is truly guarding safety and not just making paper work.

There is a nuclear plant abou 1.5 hours from where I live. They have had some really rough times over the last two or three years because they had some problems and allegedly were not handling them correctly. You really need a team of experts to get to the facts apart from the media pressures and distortions.

If global warming is the issue of the day, then reducing fossil fuel consumption is going to be mandatory.

Just some thoughts.
