Why do you live where you live?

I live in Brisbane, Australia. Mostly by choice. I am originally from Adelaide South Australia, and my husband was from the coal mining area of Yallourn Victoria, which no longer exists as the coal under the town was worth more than the town.

We have lived in Melbourne, Sydney and of course Brisbane, where we came originally in 1971.

Brisbane has a sub tropical climate - in summer it can be hot, humid and sticky but these days most folk have some airconditioning, and working contitions in air conditioning make life for those who work indoors very comfortable.

Brisbane is on the coast of the state of Queensland (top right hand corner of Australia for those who have access to a map). It is on the Brisbane River, which flows into the marvellous Moreton Bay.

We live here because

(a) We love the climate
(b) Now our children and grandchildren live here
(c) We are an hour's drive from the Gold Coast
(d) We are an hour's drive from the Sunshine Coast
(e) We are an hour's drive from the mountains (Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast Hinterland)
(f) We are near the sea
(g) Brisbane is a modern city
(h) OUr friends are here
(i) We hav emost of the facilities we need.

Would I live elsewhere? Sure. I'd like to spend 6 months of the year in Adelaide, close to my ageing parents and sister. I'd like to live in Asia for a while - just to experience living in another culture.

Your climate is tempting...

but my Scandinavian blood doesn't mind colder climates. Love to go to OZ for a holiday. Nearly went there as a young fellow, but went up to Auckland instead and spent my boat fare in no time at all. Ended up down here in the Wellington area for the next forty years.

My New Zealand Niche

We live many thousands of miles from you, Elly,

yet your description and reasons for living where you do, would be almost identical to my own. Strange how we each carve out our own little niche in the world.

Not all that strange Jeanne

as we all see it from our perspective. If I say I like the weathere here (which I have become accustomed to now) - it is hot, humid, long periods of bright sunshine etc, and it may not appeal to all. For many reasons (including a health one) I could not live (nor visit) a very cold climate, and I guess people continue to live there because they love the weather at their home.
